Cinematographers gathered in Vancouver over two days for a Night Lighting Workshop, led by Philip Lanyon csc and Nick Thomas csc, to refine their skills in capturing compelling visuals in low-light conditions. Held at Keslow Camera on March 1 and Cinelease Lot on March 2, the hands-on workshop explored a range of lighting techniques and creative approaches, equipping participants with practical tools to enhance their nighttime cinematography. One of the biggest challenges in lighting for night scenes is the increased control and responsibility required of cinematographers. “With a lot of night-lit scenes, cinematographers will find themselves with a lot more control and responsibility to set up lighting than you may starting with a typical day scene,” Lanyon explained. The workshop emphasized careful planning and scouting to help participants manage exposure levels and unforeseen lighting variables. Participants engaged in hands-on exercises, working within two practical setups to explore their own ideas. “Nick and I tried to include the participants as much as possible,” Lanyon said. “Participants were encouraged to ask questions from the instructors as well as the crew to understand the resources needed for each tool and what that tool produced.” The collaboration between Lanyon and Thomas highlighted the diversity of creative approaches in night lighting. “When we had differences of opinion, we explored that with the students so they could understand that no two approaches are identical and there is no ‘right or wrong’ way to do things,” Lanyon said. With an engaging mix of technical expertise and creative exploration, the Night Lighting Workshop left participants better equipped to tackle the complexities of nighttime cinematography.
