For the first time in its 28-year history, Reel Asian is partnering with the Canadian Society of Cinematographers to establish an award for Best Cinematography at its annual festival. While film festivals traditionally emphasize directors, Reel Asian aims to spotlight the technical artistry and craft of cinematography. Founded in 1997 by Anita Lee (now chief programming officer at the Toronto International Film Festival), Reel Asian has championed Asian-Canadian and -American filmmakers telling unique stories. With this new award, Reel Asian not only celebrates representation behind the camera but also encourages emerging artists to explore cinematography as a career, inspired by CSC members and festival alumni like Iris Ng, Alan Poon csc, and Carolyn Wong.
