The Canadian Society of Cinematographers (CSC) is delighted to announce it has joined forces with Herc Entertainment Services to be able to provide eight paid one-month apprenticeship placements to cinematographers from underrepresented communities. The effort is part of the CSC’s overall strategic goal to increase equity in the film and television industry, and to be able to offer opportunities to cinematographers in all levels of development.
“Through its current mentorship program, the Field of View Mentorship program, one of the gaps the CSC has identified for BIPOC and female cinematographers has been to access Tier A sets,” says Susan Saranchuk, CEO of the CSC. “The CSC-Herc Entertainment Services On-set Apprenticeship program is designed to help mitigate that inequity by creating opportunities for a cinematographer with experience to spend significant time shadowing the director of photography on a big show or series.”
“Herc Entertainment Services (HES) is committed to fostering opportunities for individuals who might not normally have access to Tier-A roles, helping talented people refine their skills and gain essential industry exposure,” says Chris Doran, Business Development Manager for Herc Entertainment Services. “We believe that by supporting these apprentices, we’re not only contributing to their professional development but also bringing fresh perspectives and new stories to the industry. Their unique backgrounds and experiences will add a valuable dimension to the creative process, strengthening the industry as a whole.”
Industry wide, only 8% of cinematographers on the world’s top grossing movies in 2023 were women, according to a study, The Celluloid Celling. A study by USC’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative found no women of color as directors of photography in the top 300 movies from 2016 to 2018. Men of color accounted for 15.8% of cinematographers.
“Partnering with the CSC provides a fantastic opportunity to connect with and nurture emerging talent,” says Doran. “We value the CSC’s commitment to high standards and creative excellence, which aligns with the HES mission to support and elevate the best in the industry. Together, we can provide apprentices with the guidance and resources they need to grow into future leaders, whose fresh perspectives and unique experiences will drive innovation. By fostering this next generation, we’re helping to enrich the industry with new stories and ideas that can inspire meaningful creative evolution.”
On November 4th 2024, the CSC will open applications for both the CSC Field of View Mentorship and the CSC-Herc Entertainment Services On-Set Apprenticeship Program. Mentorship program pairings will be announced by January 31st, 2025 and successful candidates for the eight apprenticeship positions will be notified on a rolling basis throughout 2025.
“To all the apprentices: Embrace this opportunity with confidence and curiosity. You bring unique strengths, perspectives, and creativity to the table, and we’re excited to see how you’ll shape the future of film,” say’s HES’ Chris Doran. “Never underestimate the value you bring and the impact you can make. You’re here for a reason, and we’re proud to support you on this journey.”
