Michael Galbraith csc first became aware of the film industry at a young age, often wandering into his father’s bedroom and finding clothespins and crumpled pieces of coloured gel. His father explained that the clothespins were used to attach the gel to lights, though at the time, this meant little to a child who didn’t understand what his father’s job was – only that he was gone for long hours each day.
Years later, Michael came to understand his father’s work. He had started at a local television station and would occasionally bring Michael along. From there, he joined the technicians’ union and moved into commercials and films. After high school, Michael began accompanying him to work during the summers, and that experience proved decisive – he was hooked, drawn to the energy and collaboration of film and television production.
After graduating, Michael also joined the technicians’ union and began working his way up. His early days were spent sweeping floors in construction, while seeking opportunities in lighting and grip departments whenever possible. During this period, he stepped away for six years to complete a formal electrical apprenticeship, earning multiple electrical licenses as a practical backup plan.
As it turned out, the industry gained momentum, and Michael was able to build a steady career within it. He progressed to working as a feature film gaffer alongside both CSC and ASC cinematographers, occasionally stepping into opportunities to shoot second unit. Over time, trust and experience opened more doors, eventually leading to opportunities to shoot full projects independently.
Michael describes his career as a privilege, marked by meaningful collaborations with many CSC members. The generosity and openness of the community – its willingness to share knowledge and experience – left a lasting impression, making it especially meaningful for him to now be counted among their peers.
