Legendary camera operator Harald Ortenburger csc shares advice from his 30+ year career.

A small sampling of his feature credits include A Christmas Story, Moonstruck, Titanic and Open Range. He has worked alongside the most skilled DP’s who ever existed: Haskell Wexler, Vilmos Zsigmond, Laszlo Kovacs ,Bill Fraker, Dante Spinotti ,Conrad Hall and Jim Muro, just to name a few. Besides working with top DP talent, Ortenburger has worked with very notable actors such as Jack Nicholson, Kirk Douglas, Marlon Brando, Robert Di Nero, Jane Fonda, Michelle Pfeiffer and Susan Sarandon.

When asked about advice for aspiring operators, he says: “First and foremost, believe in yourself; but equally important from my point of view is to save your money. And what I mean by that is try to put yourself in a position where you can make decisions based on what’s good for your career longevity; not just what’s good for your bank account”.
